If you´ve been searching for a cred-oozing pop-punk band that features a high-school English teacher, a Nickelodean TV star, four long-time friends and former members of a grocery list of defining bands from Southern Ontario´s fertile rock ´n´ roll grounds, you´ve shown up to the right party. Toronto´s the Artist Life have been playing their suburb-raised brand of pop-punk across Canada since 2007, and are quickly becoming one of the country´s most notable acts.
While 2008 saw the band relentlessly promoting their independent release "Living" alongside bands like The Loved Ones, A Wilhelm Scream, The Swellers and Polar Bear Club, The Artist Life were also fortunate enough to snag the attention from the good folks at American taste-maker Alternative Press who named them Unsigned Band of the Month in September. This was enough to peak the interest of Canadian power-house indie Underground Operations, who released The Artist Life´s "Let´s Start A Riot" Canada-wide on October 28th.
Described in Exclaim! as "one of the year´s finest contributions to Canada´s melodic punk community", LSAR has gained widespread media acclaim for its catchy hooks, lyrical optimism and fist-pumping anthems. While the album draws its comparisons to Blackwood´s previous tenure in street punk legends Jersey, it also brings to life the band´s viability at mainstream radio. Although the The Artist Life´s member´s past projects include The Fullblast, Jude the Obscure and At the Mercy of Inspiration, LSAR offers a departure from the tech-heavy stylings of members´ past endeavors and offers a more melodic, pop-formulaic approach to songwriting that is both refreshing and addictive. Since its release, 102.1 The Edge offered them their second FU Award nomination, this time for Song of the Year, Japan´s Boundee Records signed on for a Japanese release, MTV Live witnessed a raucous studio performance and Chartattack.com raved after their sold-out CMW appearance.
With the announcement of a full Western Canadian tour this spring, The Artist Life will bring their high-powered live show to the Pacific coast and back alongside Vancouver´s A Trophy Life just in time for their new video for "Sleep So Sound" to drop nation-wide. In between tours the band has been writing and demoing what will be the full-length follow-up to LSAR whose release date is not yet scheduled.
