Stone Temple Pilots are said to be in a legal dispute with ex-frontman Scott Weiland over misuse of the band's name. The singer, who was fired from the group earlier this year following a 27-year career, is being sued by the band for using their name in order to advance his own solo work, reportsThe Associated Press. Tension rose between the band members when Weiland was warned against playing a solo tour, during which he would perform the band's early album 'Core', but continued to play the gigs. The frontman was then officially fired in February and released a statement declaring, "I learned of my supposed 'termination' from Stone Temple Pilots this morning by reading about it in the press. Not sure how I can be 'terminated' from a band that I founded, fronted and co-wrote many of its biggest hits, but that's something for the lawyers to figure out." The lawsuit, which was filed on Friday, is intended to stop Weiland from using the band's name or performing their songs. Stating addiction and tardiness as reasons for Weiland's dismissal and claiming that the singer has gone out of his way to stop Stone Temple Pilots' new single 'Out Of Time' from gaining radio airplay, the band also claim that an agreement from 1996 states that no former members can use the group's name. Further disagreement has also been raised with the appointment of Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington as Stone Temple Pilots' new frontman. Posting on his website, Weiland stated that "...the band that played last weekend was not Stone Temple Pilots and it was wrong of them to present themselves as that. First of all they don't have the legal right to call themselves STP because I'm still a member of the band. And more importantly, they don't have the ethical right to call themselves Stone Temple Pilots because it's misleading and dishonest to the millions of fans that have followed us for so many years."
