The Veer Union

The Veer Union interview

The Veer Union
Submitted by Johan Wippsson on 2009-09-22
Canadian band The Veer Union has made one of 2009’s most impressive modern rock album in “Against The Grain”. With great melodies built up by heavy guitars and melodic choruses they have showed once again that Canada is the country when it comes to quality rock. We had the chance to ask them some questions, enjoy!
Hey guys how are you?
We´re great thanks, a few beers deep at some hotel in Phoenix!
First of all I wanna thank you for an awesome album. Have been waiting for it some time. You must be really, really satisfied with the result?
Yes, we are so very very proud of it! We poured our hearts and souls into it!
And now you´re on tour with Sick Puppies and Hurt, which must be blast? Real rock n roll life I guess, and smashed guitars so far?
You don´t even know!
Is it a long tour?
Till the middle of september, pretty decent length but not the longest.
You were in band called Everything After and did some great demos with Randy Staub back in 2006 or so. What happened there? You just disappeared and I thought that shit, these demos are too good, they cant stop making music.
We took what we had then, and evolved to what we are now.
Then you formed Veer and released a very impressive independent album. This must have been a pretty hard period. You had a good product and toured for like two years, butwithout any deal?
We went out and toured as much as we can. Now we´re signed and doing the same thing, just on a bigger scale.
Then you signed with universal, can you tell a little bit about that process?
Universal has been amazing to us! Definitely the right choice. They´ve backed everything we do since day one, which makes it that much easier to go out there and do what we do.
You changed from Veer to The Veer Union, why, any legal problems?
It was more of a band decision. Before TVU we were all in other bands and not digging the situations we were in. So we "veered" away from the negativity and came together as a "Union". Originally it was Veer, when we got signed, we added the Union.
Canada has produced a number of great acts like Nickelback, Default, Theory of deadman and lately Jet Black Stare and State of shock. There must be the air or something!!! Why do you think that Canada is so good in producing act after act?
There are so many amazing bands from all over the world! Just so happens all of those are from Canada, lol.
Lets talk a little about the album, Against The Grain. How did you choose the title?
We chose "Against the Grain" because we felt it really represents our band. From our individual experiences to being a band in general, so many people tell you, you can´t make it, or you´re wasting your time. We went Against the Grain.
You worked with top notch producer Greg Archilla (Matchbox 20, Collective Soul, SafetySuit). How did you come in contact with him and was the process?
We actually ran into Greg at a night club in Vancouver after one of our local shows. We met him through a mutual friend, gave him our myspace, and the rest is history!
I have a number of favorite tracks in Over You, Seasons, Youth of yesterday and Im Sorry. Do you have any tunes that are more special?
lol the song is called "Over Me", but it´s so hard to say which ones are more special than the others. We all have a special connection with the last track "what have we done"
So, thanks for the time. Good luck with the tour and hope to see you in Sweden soon!!!

Did you know that?

Def Leppard´s drummer, Rick Allen, lost an arm in a car crash in 1984. However, Rick decided to keep on playing, and learned to do it with his feet and some programmed drum lines. The band continued as normal, and their next album with their "new" drummer was "Hysteria".
