R.E.M. achieved global success with the 1988 release of GREEN, the Athens, Georgia quartet’s sixth studio album and first for Warner Bros. Records, which would be the band’s label home for the rest of their recording career. While R.E.M. was fast becoming one of the most acclaimed and revered acts in the U.S., GREEN was their first album to gain the attention of a worldwide audience. Packed with tracks destined to be definitive additions to the band’s canon, including “Orange Crush,” “Pop Song 89,” and “Stand,” GREEN was certified double platinum by the RIAA and doubled the domestic sales of the band’s previous release. GREEN continued R.E.M.’s dedication to the message of social consciousness, as evidenced by the album’s title, which would go on to became a ubiquitous buzzword for environmentally friendly initiatives.
To celebrate the landmark album’s 25-year anniversary, Rhino is releasing a two-disc deluxe edition that features the remastered original album accompanied by a disc of live performances taken from the penultimate show of R.E.M.’s 130-date Green World Tour. All 21 songs were recorded in Greensboro, North Carolina on November 10, 1989, just miles from where Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Bill Berry had their very first recording session at Mitch Easter’s Drive In Studio in Winston-Salem.
The anniversary set is packaged in a hard clamshell box (similar to previous R.E.M. reissues) and comes with four postcards and a foldout poster, plus insightful liner notes by Uncut editor, Allan Jones. GREEN: 25TH ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION will be available on May 14 as a 2-disc set and digitally. The same day, the remastered album with original art and packaging will also be available on 180-gram vinyl.
In anticipation of the anniversary set, Rhino will release a limited edition, five-track EP as part of Record Store Day. This exclusive CD features a handful of performances from the Greensboro show that, due to space constraints, are not found on the Deluxe Edition, including the Green track “I Remember California” and classics like “So. Central Rain” and “Feeling Gravitys Pull.” Limited to just 2,500 copies, the disc comes with an original (non-reproduction) patch from the Green Tour. These patches were recently uncovered in the band’s vault. The LIVE IN GREENSBORO EP will be available for Record Store Day on April 20 for $7.98.
The concert spread across the anniversary set and the Record Store Day EP captures a fiery set from R.E.M., which had been forged in the crucible of nearly one year of shows. R.E.M. performed most of GREEN (“Get Up” “World Leader Pretend” and “You Are The Everything”), while mixing in early favorites like “Fall On Me,” “Finest Worksong,” “The One I Love” and “Perfect Circle” from the band’s 1983 debut Murmur. The show also finds the band testing out new songs (“Low” and “Belong”) that would appear two years later on GREEN’s follow-up, Out Of Time.

Just two years after contracting a rare skin-tissue disease, Slayer guitarist and songwriter Jeff Hanneman died on Thursday from liver failure at a hospital near his home in Southern California.
Slayer made the news public on Thursday afternoon, announcing that the band "is devastated" and calling Hanneman, who was 49, their bandmate and brother. Twitter quickly filled with messages from fans and fellow musicians, many of whom were in Los Angeles for the 5th Annual Revolver Golden Gods Awards show at Club Nokia. Disturbed/Device frontman David Draiman was among the very first, posting "RIP TO A TITAN OF METAL," while drummer Mike Portnoy wrote, "WOW...I'm in shock...RIP Jeff Hanneman."
Hanneman has been off the road since early 2011, when he contracted necrotizing fasciitis -- most likely from a spider bite -- a quick-progressing disease that literally eats away at the flesh from deep layers of skin and tissue. Exodus' Gary Holt stood in for Hanneman starting in February of 2011, while Pat O'Brien joined the band when Holt returned to Exodus during 2011.
It's not known what role the disease played in Hanneman's liver failure.
Throughout the ordeal, Hanneman's bandmates expressed optimism that he would one day return to the group full-time. Bassist-singer Tom Araya told Billboard during last year's Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival tour that Hanneman was "free of the disease" and was "working on his playing ability...He's working on strengthening his arm and his ability to play." He predicted that Slayer would "probably get together and start writing together and start making a new album," the group's first since 2009's "World Painted Blood," with Hanneman contributing material.
But in February guitarist Kerry King told Australian press that "we don't know when Jeff's gonna be able to play guitar. Jeff's kind of like a wait-and-see thing."
Born in Oakland, Calif., and a devoted Raiders fan, Hanneman was raised primarily in Long Beach and became fascinated with wars and military campaigns -- themes he'd bring to Slayer's music -- via his father, a World War II veteran, and brothers who served in Vietnam. He met King in 1981 and decided to form their own band, mixing heavy metal and punk influences and signing with Metal Blade Records for Slayer's first two albums, "Show No Mercy" in 1983 and "Hell Awaits" in 1985. The group made an eyebrow-raising move to the hip-hop label Def Jam in 1986 for the covers album "Undisputed Attitude and the classic "Reign in Blood."
Slayer has released seven more studio albums and two live albums, as well as a pair of EPs. They've sold 4.9 million albums in the SoundScan era (1991-present), with the classics "Reign in Blood" (1986), "South of Heaven" (1988) and "Seasons of the Abyss" (1990) accounting for over 2 million of that tally. Ten of their albums have charted on the Billboard 200, with 2006's "Christ Illusion" being the highest debut at No. 5.
Hanneman, an ardent collector of World War II memorabilia, was at the center of the controversy over Slayer's supposed Nazi sympathies, stemming from the resemblance of the group's eagle logo to a Third Reich image and the shape of the S in the group's typography, and from songs such as "Reign in Blood's" "Angel of Death," about German doctor Josef Mengele and his horrific "experiments" at the Auschwitz death camp. But Hanneman frequently explained that the song was in no way intended to glorify Mengele. "I know why people misrepresent it," he told one radio interviewer. "It's because they get a knee-jerk reaction to it. There's nothing I put in the lyrics that says necessarily he was a bad man because to me -- well, isn't it obvious? I shouldn't have to tell you that."
Hanneman's songs have been recorded by groups such as Hatebreed, Children of Bodom, Hellsongs, Cradle of Filth and others, and sampled by rapper Styles-P. He's survived by Kathy, his wife of 16 years, sister Kathy and two brothers, Michael and Larry. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Influential '90s New York City-based indie rock band Texas Is The Reason have announced their final shows ever. Beginning on Friday, July 26 in Aurich, Germany, the week-long tour will take in four evenings and performances in Germany, one in Spain and three in the United Kingdom, culminating in a final performance at the Electric Ballroom in London on Sunday, August 4. The upcoming week of shows follows Texas Is The Reason's recent appearance at this past weekend's Groezrock Festival in Belgium and its final, successful North American set of performances that saw the band performing in markets such as Toronto, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Atlanta, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Tickets for all of the upcoming shows will go on sale on Thursday, May 2. The band will be performing these shows in support of its latest release, the 16-track Do You Know Who You Are?: The Complete Collection. Released on February 12, 2013 though Revelation Records, the album is a comprehensive collection of every recorded piece of music in the band's history, featuring the original Do You Know Who You Are? full-length album, the self-titled EP, as well as two B-sides never before on CD/digital, and two previously unreleased tracks written in 1997 and recorded in 2012 with J. Robbins titled "Every Little Girl's Dream" and "When Rock 'N' Roll Was Just A Baby." The album package also includes never-before-published photos, a comprehensive concert history for the band from 1995-2012, and complete lyrics. They came from some of the most popular, if not polarizing hardcore bands of the early '90s (Shelter, 108, Ressurection), but by the time Texas Is The Reason formed in 1994, a new aesthetic crystallized almost instantly and reduced its members' previous efforts to history. Indeed, it was only a year later when Revelation Records released the band's self-titled EP, their name derived from a lyric in the Misfits song "Bullet," that Texas Is The Reason were already headlining their own tours in America and well on their way to defining a new moment in post-punk. In April of 1996, the band reinforced that initial success with their first and only album, produced by Jawbox's J. Robbins and named after the last words that John Lennon was alleged to have heard: "Do You Know Who You Are?" In the years since, SPIN, Alternative Press, and Paste would all go on to call Do You Know Who You Are? an essential '90s album. Unfortunately, after a year of heavy promotion and touring for the record, inner-band tension came to a head and the band officially split in 1997. Its members would go on to form Jets To Brazil, New End Original and Solea. Since then the band had only reunited once - for two sold-out New York City shows in 2006 - but their presence has barely waned: Newer generations of bands like Spitalfield, Into It. Over It., and Transit have covered Texas Is The Reason songs over the years, and even vets such as Thursday, Taking Back Sunday, and Armor For Sleep have all publicly cited their influence. So after agreeing to headline the opening night of Revelation Records' 25th Anniversary festival in New York City earlier this year (and once again promptly selling it out), the band decided it was time to tie up the longest of loose ends by releasing a remastered discography collection in 2013 featuring its entire recorded output, as well as two freshly recorded, never-before-released songs - their final songs ever. Texas Is The Reason will be performing their final shows in Europe and UK during July and August. Tour dates below. JULY 26 - Aurich, Germany - Omas Teich Festival 27 - Berlin, Germany - Greenville Festival 29 - Cologne, Germany - Stollwerck 30 - Wiesbaden, Germany - Schlachthof 31 - Barcelona, Spain - Estraperlo Club AUGUST 02 - Glasgow, UK - Classic Grand 03 - Manchester, UK - Manchester Academy 3 04 - London, UK - Electric Ballroom - FINAL SHOW EVER

London-based indie-rock quartet The Boxer Rebellion's forthcoming album, Promises, is now available to stream in its entirety exclusively on the iTunes Store (http://www.itunes.com/theboxerrebellion). The album stream begins now and will remain available until release day on May 14. The new album, produced in conjunction with notable producer Billy Bush, is the uplifting and cinematic follow-up to the band's critically-acclaimed The Cold Still. Fans who pre-order Promises will instantly receive a download of the album's first single, "Diamonds," a song The Boxer Rebellion will perform live on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno on Friday, June 14 In addition to the release of the new album, the Promises North American tour will see the band's immense live show re-worked from the ground-up, starting in Montreal on May 21 and hitting numerous cities for the first time ever, including Edmonton, Calgary, and Pittsburgh. The band will also play Neptune, Seattle (6/2); Fillmore, San Francisco (6/5); Avalon, Los Angeles (6/7); Metro, Chicago (6/15); and Webster Hall, NYC (6/20). A complete list of tour dates is below. The Boxer Rebellion has also announced its largest UK headline show to date, a performance at the legendary venue The Forum on October 11. Tickets for the upcoming tour are now on sale. The Boxer Rebellion took to their London rehearsal space and transformed it into a recording studio where the songs for Promises would eventually come together over the last 18 months. Moving away from the more analog and darker soundscapes that enveloped the band's previous album, Promises is a significant step in a different direction for the London four-piece - a hi-fi, soaring piece of work that truly delivers on the band's epic, signature sound, and individual skill as musicians. From the retro-glossiness of the album's opener, "Diamonds," to the wall-of-sound that is "Fragile," to the towering beauty of "Low," "New York," and "Dream," Promises presents itself as an evolution in aesthetic - diverse in soundscapes but singular in grand ambition - for a band that continues to push and explore its creative ability with each new release. The Boxer Rebellion will be making the following North American appearances throughout May and June. Tour dates below. MAY 23 - Montreal, QC - Café Campus * 24 - Toronto, ON - Opera House * 28 - Edmonton, ON - Starlite Room * 29 - Calgary AB - Republik * 31 - Vancouver, BC - Electric Owl * JUNE 01 - Portland, OR - Doug Fir * 02 - Seattle, WA - Neptune * 05 - San Francisco, CA - Fillmore * 07 - Los Angeles, CA - Avalon * 10 - Phoenix, AZ - Crescent Ballroom * 12 - Denver, CO - Bluebird * 15 - Chicago, IL - Metro * 17 - Pittsburgh, PA - Mr Smalls * 18 - Philadelphia, PA - Union Transfer (co-headline w/ Rogue Wave) * 20 - New York, NY - Webster Hall * 22 - Boston, MA - Sinclair * OCTOBER 11 - London, England - The Forum * = Fossil Collective supporting

NEW YEARS DAY will further their quest to unite the living, dead and undead with the release of their new album VICTIM TO VILLIAN on Century Media Records. Led by the dynamic Ash Costello, these Orange County alt-rockers will haunt your stereo and warm your heart, their tongue-in-cheek macabre and molten mischief sure to become mainstay in summer soundtracks nationwide. Produced by Erik Ron [Panic At The Disco, Saosin], the album features a guest appearance by Motionless In White frontman Chris Motionless on the track "Angel Eyes." See below for the album cover and track listing.
"When we hit the studio with Erik Ron to start writing last summer, the theme and idea for this album came almost immediately," says Costello. "I was dealing with so much at that point in my life and I felt like I had to make a choice to wake up in the morning and stop being the victim to it all and start owning my power and let my inner villain come out. The album follows that story, the transformation, and the satisfying vengeance that comes along with it. The direction is heavier and darker but still has that hauntingly weird and fun vibe that we have become known for. We have so much in store visually to go along with the record, especially between now and the Warped Tour - this tour is going to become known as the 'death of the party'!"
Catch NEW YEARS DAY on tour all summer, bringing the new material to life and rocking the VANS WARPED TOUR everyday on the Tillys stage.
VICTIM TO VILLAIN pre-sales bundles will be announced next week. Tracklist: Do Your Worst I'm No Good Bloody Mary Victim Hello Darkness Death of the Party The Arsonist Angel Eyes (feat. Chris Motionless) Any Last Words? Tombstone Last Great Story |

On July 15th, Pet Shop Boys return in triumphant form with their new studio album 'Electric', the first to appear on their own label x2 (via Kobalt Label Services).
The album is the first Pet Shop Boys studio album to be produced by Stuart Price. Visit Stereogum for an extensive "Progress Report" interview with the duo -- along with the debut of the new track 'Axis' HERE.
In March this year, a teaser video for 'Electric' appeared online. The accompanying music, 'Axis', which is the album's opening track, is now available in full online and is here accompanied by a video.
'Electric' features nine tracks in total - eight brand new Pet Shop Boys' songs plus a cover of Bruce Springsteen's 'The Last To Die'. The result is as uncompromising a collection of dance anthems as Pet Shop Boys have ever made.
Pet Shop Boys said: "'Electric' is very much set on the dance floor. Our latest album often evolves as a response to our previous album and, whereas 'Elysium' had a reflective mood, 'Electric' is pretty banging! And working with Stuart Price on a studio album is something we have wanted to do for a very long time".
Stuart Price said: "Making 'Electric' was an exciting experience. We recorded it between Berlin, London and Los Angeles using various techniques between old school synth and drum machine programming and new school computer mangling. For me it was a chance to work with two people who shaped so much of my musical taste, yet who keep on pushing farther in both a natural and unexpected fashion. 'Disco' (from 1986) was an album that always spoke to me because it blended song arrangements with dance floor mixes, and that is what 'Electric' felt like to make. Allowing songs to be full length without considering the pop rules, disregarding classic structures and instead just working instinctively on what was fun and danceable."
Singer/rapper Example, who won a BRIT award last year for Best British Single, appears as a guest vocalist on the track 'Thursday'.
The track listing for 'Electric' is:
1. Axis
2. Bolshy
3. Love is a bourgeois construct
4. Fluorescent
5. Inside a dream
6. The last to die
7. Shouting in the evening
8. Thursday (featuring Example)
9. Vocal
As previously announced, Pet Shop Boys will embark on the 'Electric' tour in May this year. The tour is created in collaboration with Es Devlin (creative director/designer) and Lynne Page (stage director/choreographer), and has already received rave reviews when it debuted in Mexico in March. Tour dates, including the newly announced North American dates, are as follows:
13 May - Movistar Arena, Santiago, Chile
16 May - Luna Park, Buenos Aires, Argentina
18 May - Conmebol Bourbon Convention Center, Asunción, Paraguay
22 May - Credicard Hall, São Paulo, Brazil
25 May - Centro de Eventos Bima, Bogota, Colombia
3 June - Oktiaborski Concert Hall, St Petersburg, Russian Federation

Selfhood, the new album from the UK'sSharksis out today via Rise Records.Selfhood, which Alternative Press called "another great brit-punk catch"is the follow up to their striking 2012 offeringNo Gods. To purchase the album on iTunes, click HERE. Selfhood was recorded in just two weeks in Southampton, UK at The Ranch Studio and produced by Lewis Johns (Gnarwolves, Bastions). The album channels influences from the likes of The Smiths, Richard Hawley and The Cribs. This new release expands on the explosive punk-meets-Brit-pop anthems on No Gods, and showcases a more mature and solid live band - a result of endless international touring in support of past releases. "I wrote most of the lyrics in a room above a morgue in which I lived with my fiancée for about five months," said Mattock. "The place was an old Victorian building with no heat, running water, or bathroom. It wasn't even legally residential. A lot of what I was going through around this period is channeled in the lyrics. These are the most intimate and personal songs I've written - thus Selfhood is the most fitting title." Born in 2007, Sharks is James Mattock (vocals), Andrew Bayliss (guitar), Sam Lister (drums), and Carl Murrihy (bass). They released their first independent EP, Shallow Waters, in 2008 and drummed up a serious buzz while playing with the likes of Gallows, The Wedding Present, Social Distortion, Hot Water Music, The Gaslight Anthem, Baby Shambles and more. In 2011 they released The Joys of Living 2008-2010, which BBC's Zane Lowe praised as "the sound of a band reaching that moment when they are absolutely ready." Their 2012 release No Gods introduced the band to U.S. audiences, with Alternative Press declaring that their music "bristles with a wonderful sense of rock and roll heritage that serves as a tribute to fallen heroes... something refreshing and contemporary." Stay tuned for announcements on U.S. touring plans.
