Review

The number of rock fusion artists is not exactly high these days, so it is with great pleasure that I present to you a Swedish guitar phenomenon called PELLE HOLMBERG. It is equally seldom that this kind of quality pops up on a CD in this genre. If you want it short, I’d say the PELLE HOLMBERG GROUP is Sweden’s answer to the classic BAKED POTATO SUPER LIVE from 1982, or even LOS LOBOTOMYS.

Stylewise this varies from funky rock/fusion even with some melodic hard rock grooves, on to some slightly folk melody inspired moments. The latter can be heard in the lovely “New song” with a rather disctinct beat but also some softer JANNE SCHAFFER vibes. Rock based stuff with a funky overtone can be heard in the opening title track “Ghost ship”, with quite a MICHAEL LANDAU type of rhythm guitar from Pelle. I also recommend you to take a listen to the bass playing by MATHIAS TOFTE on this one. Also groovy and rocking is the funky “I’ve had it”, with some complex moves in the arrangement. If you like the blues oriented side of jazz, try the smooth ending tune “Åkarp”.

No matter the style here, you get splendid solo playing from Pelle Holmberg. He truly is a gifted guitarist! Fans of rock fusion can’t miss out on this gem.
