Review

Time for some funk/soul and rock again! Swedish band ABRAXAS never made it big, which is a shame. This 4-track CD single is all I’ve found by them, and I would have liked to hear a lot more. Imagine a mix of LEVEL 42, SIMPLY RED, DAN REED and the more commercial side of TOWER OF POWER and you’re in the same neighborhood.

Opener “Love and emotion” (the title track) leads the way with a distinct beat and a cool driving force in the rhythm section. Like an uptempo LEVEL 42. Same goes for “Sweet music” which has got lovely slap bass playin’ from STAFFAN KÅGE. A slight latin vibe is added in “Nothing in my way” which is a nice song that even carries a certain westcoast spice. Sometimes I think of the “heavier” side of MICHAEL RUFF here, as well.

“Angel from above” is track 3 and slows things down a bit, also adding a reggae beat that I am not fully on terms with. They’re really good but the song kind of doesn’t follow the thread of the other three tracks. (Swedish Diamonds series, #21)
