Review

In the grand flora of melodic pop/rock CCM bands, we find the much too anonymous band 7:E HIMLEN from the south-eastern part of Sweden, the city of Kalmar. They released one vinyl single in 1989 and then this CD in 1996 followed by the mini-CD “Tre” in 2001.

This is really something to get if you’re into westcoast, soul and well-produced pop/rock. I mainly think of EDIN/ÅDAHL and early works of ANDERS GLENMARK and FREDA. Also some songs with more obvious westcoast hints to be found here, like the lovely “Evighet” (Eternity) and the TOTO spiced softie “Kom och gå” (Come and go). Same goes for “Himlen är här” which reminds of another Swedish band: F.R.E.E. (see review at melodic.net).

Some songs are quite intense even though being pop/rock with a clear soul vibe. Good arrangements all over. “Tillbaka” (Back) is a groovy rock/pop tune with some funk, for example as well as “Kärleken är total” (Love is total).

For being a self-made album with their own production this is very good. There are no obvious flaws, even though the voice of lead vocalist MATS JOHANSSON is “not more than quite good”, no offense meant. I am still sure that a lot of westcoast soul fans will like this a lot. It is close to a four in grading. Recently reviewed Swedish band SOULVATION is another band I can compare them to, by the way. (Swedish Diamonds Series, #30)
