Review

I remember when I bought a CD with The Waltons ten years ago on a sell out at a record store in Stockholm, Sweden. It was a CD for 2 dollars and it looked cool so thought I should give it a try. The cool thing was that this CD with the band The Waltons ended up Top 20 on the year list over 1992 years best albums. Straight ahead Midwest rock without any wider curves. All just with great melodies, vibe and finally the voice of Jason Plumb... And here I am with a brand new soloalbum with that lovely voice. Can it go wrong? No, of course not. His voice is still perfect and the style of musical hasn´t changed dramatically either. We´re still in midwestern land, even if the style is a LITTLE more acoustic and a bit softer than it was with The Waltons. This is a really fine moment in Midwest rock (even if the guy is from canada), and if you saw my top 30 list over the best CD´s of 2003, you saw this album on that list. It´s nothing unique at all though. It´s not revolutionary either. It is just 11 (one is hidden) great basic midwestern rock tracks with beautiful melodies and Jasons LOVELY voice. The second one out "Back At Me" with a up-tempo beat is one favorite, third out, the softer "Bring Me Everything" is another, and for some WEIRD reason I start to think of John Farnham when I hear that track... anyway... hmm... more fave tracks are "Need You Too See" with a soft acoustic edge, all produced by Ed Robertson (member of Barenaked Ladies) in a Daniel Lanois goes Chris Isaak sort of landscape. And then I haven´t mentioned the lyrics. But I suggest you check them out yourself by buying this album. Jason Plumb is a true hero. And thanks to the Record Store sell out ten years ago for the discovery! Go Canada Go...

Buffalo
I agree totally. Jason Plumb is the best kept secret in North America.

Hot Potato
This is one of my favourite albums. It's melodic, mature, compelling, timeless. Ed (Barenaked Ladies) Robertson has done a masterful job producing, and Sarah Harmer backs up "Old Familiar Ring" beautifully. It's everything you probably loved about The Waltons taken to the next level. Highly recommended.

Did you know that?

The name "Minus the Bear" comes from an in-joke among the band members, referring to the 70´s television program, B. J. and the Bear. "A friend of the band had gone on a date,” explains singer-guitarist Jake Snider, "and one of us asked him afterwards how the date went. Our friend said, ´You know that TV show from the ´70s B.J. and The Bear? It was like that... minus The Bear.´ That’s the straight truth."
