Review

Spoken released their sixth effort and third release from Tooth and Nail records with "Spoken" on September 25, 2007. Spoken delivers heavy guitars and Soasin like tones and vocals. The band consists of Matt Baird (Vocals); Jeff Cunningham, Aaron Wiese (Guitar); Brandon Thigpen (Bass); Oliver Crumpton (Drums).

The band does have a few good stand out tracks on the album "Not Soon Forgotten" and "The Meaning Of..." and "When Hope Is All You Have". "You´re The One" is my favorite on the alum which is the slowest song on the album but shows the true dynamic of the band that I think they should capture in the rest of the tunes. The really slow and clear vocals deliver sensual tones and a very cool piano part in the tune thats gives it a haunting yet beautiful vibe.

Most of the songs on the record have blazing fast guitar riffs and loud and quick-rising vocals, all bounded by a full-sounding rhythm section. Now if your a fan of Saosin, National Product, Underoath, you´ll probably dig these guys. “We didn’t intentionally go for a heavier sound,” guitarist Jeff Cunnigham says about the album. “We just wrote what came to mind and I think it turned into some of our best material.”

The recording process was quiet intriguing. Singer Matt Baird would download parts to his iPod, where he began to craft the lyrics for the record. His finished work centers on topics like redemption and restoration, and reaches its pinnacle on the album’s tenth track, “When Hope is All You Have,” which began as a phrase he used during his father’s funeral just before recording began.

“There are songs about healing and hope and about moving on after we’ve made mistakes,” Baird said. “I felt some pressure in writing, hoping my parts would turn out as good as the music. But I think it all came out better than I could’ve imagined.”

This album it isn´t the best thing I have heard in a while but, I think it´s just a repeat of many things we have seen in this genre and not too much stands out to me. Very cool vocals I might add but we are yearning for something more from a sixth record though. I think their previous release "Last Chance To Breathe" has more overall stunning songs on that record but this album does deliver some songs that will catch you, no doubt.

Did you know that?

The name "Minus the Bear" comes from an in-joke among the band members, referring to the 70´s television program, B. J. and the Bear. "A friend of the band had gone on a date,” explains singer-guitarist Jake Snider, "and one of us asked him afterwards how the date went. Our friend said, ´You know that TV show from the ´70s B.J. and The Bear? It was like that... minus The Bear.´ That’s the straight truth."
