Story of the Year returns after three years of silence with an album called The Black Swan. How does the 2008 version of SOTY sound? They sound freaking amazing! The first thing I notice is the sound, it almost shoots out of my speakers. There are chugging guitars, pounding drums and crispy vocals, overall a great production signed team Feldmann-Baskette. To describe the sound in one word: HUGE! The question I bet all fans has is, can this album to the best selling Page Avenue from 2003? Well, read on and find out!
So how are the songs then? First single Wake Up is a up-tempo rocker that is getting some airplay on the rock stations here in Sweden, a good song but there are even better songs on here. Tracks number three and four, The Antidote and Tell Me (P.A.C) are those kinds of song that just makes me sit there with a stupid smile on my face, nodding my head and saying out loud: Damn this is good! They are the kind of songs that I bring my friends into my room to hear.
What else? Cannonball is a great track as is the more acoustic Terrified which is a nice soothing track after all the hard hitting rock tracks on the record. Later I can almost hear some Bullet for my Valentine on the closing track Welcome to Our New War, a speedy track with some screaming and a nice chorus. The same influences can be heard on the opener Chose Your Fate, so they open big and close big and everything in between is pretty damn big as well.
Fans of BFMV or SOTY’s previous work will be more than pleased with this record. If you are a big fan of tough modern rock I cannot see why you would not want to buy this record. Other similar bands are Alexisonfire and Boysetsfire. Maybe there would have been room for one more calmer song like Terrified but who the hell cares? I’ve got no major complaints at all.
To summarize things; great songs, great guitars, bass, drums and vocals, this is actually a great album! However, is this better than Page Avenue? Let me tell you this, it at least AS good as PA and I am leaning towards saying that The Black Swan actually is better. So do us all a favor and play this often and loud!
