Review

JOE BONAMASSA is easily one of the hottest guitar players of the 2000’s, especially in the blues rock genre. After having teamed up with singer BETH HART, releasing the CD “Seesaw” in 2013 they now release this double-album “Live in Amsterdam”.

I’m positively surprised to hear how good Hart is as a live singer. She handles all the variations in style, since this recording brings anything from r’n’b tinged rock, through rather bluesy rockers to more jazz spiced rock/blues songs and boogie rock. Occasionally, Joe and Beth are involved as songwriters but the main part of this double-album consists of other songwriters – and some pretty well-known ones, too. To mention just a few: Al Green, Melody Gardot, Tom Waits and Steve Cropper.

The live sound is very good and it almost feels like a studio recording in that aspect. The rhythm section is also top notch, including a wonderful horn section. Some songs to check up (even though I just recommend the whole caboodle); the Tina Turner tune “Nutbush city limits”, the folk inspired “If I tell you I love you” and “Your heart is as black as night” with sensitive singing from Beth and a truly great guitar solo by Joe. Try this album! It sure ain’t lacking in quality.
