Carl Franklin - Been a while

Ola Gränshagen Format: Album
Year: 2013
Genre: Westcoast
Producer: Carl & Jay Franklin
Artist discography

It’s so wonderful when a completely unexpected CD arrives and proves to be real good. And this has happened again, with this CARL FRANKLIN album from the US. His music is soul, r’n’b and some westcoast mixed together. I think of bands and artists like HUEY LEWIS & THE NEWS, STEELY DAN and LITTLE RIVER BAND here.

Vocal-wise, Carl reminds a bit of BILL LABOUNTY at times. Same goes for one or two songs as well, at least if you look at Labounty’s more rough-edged songs. But even more unusual: there are phrases where Carl sounds like the late and sadly missed KEVIN GILBERT! There’s also a surprisingly cool version of BEATLES’ “Drive my car” with tons of groove and lovely harmony vocals!

Those of you who adore westcoast rock should check up “Waiting for the Summer to come”, “Chain reaction” (with JOHN SCOFIELD guesting on guitar!), “Boogie groove” and “Out of your way”.

Musically it’s above average even though it’s pretty audible that the CD was recorded in quite a rush. On a major label or with a careful producer it could have been awesome. As it is, this is a real nice CD. One or two weaker songs, like “The Titanic”, but otherwise a recommendation for sure.

Hi, Ola! Thanks for the review. One mistake: The album was produced by Carl and Jay Franklin. Ben Franklin has been dead for a long time. :) Thanks again for the great review! Carl
