Alkaline Trio returns with a new album, this time on Epitaph Records. As usual we are treated to a bunch of punk rock songs even though I believe the tempo is dialed down a notch this time. It is impossible not to draw a comparison to Bad Religion when I hear this music. Title track This Addiction is a catchy number and closing song Fine is another good one with a really nice intro. Dine, Dine My Darling is also quite catchy but then something happens to the album.
It loses quality and somehow it just becomes uninteresting to me. The tempo is almost too low to be a punk album on most songs. It just goes on as a straight up rock album and some songs I forget before I finished listening to them. There are trumpets and horns on some songs and it does not do anything for me. Punk rock should make me want to jump around to the music and this album gives me that feeling way to rarely and it is a shame. The good songs are good but the not so good songs are unfortunately too many. The American Scream is the best song in my opinion.
I think that fans of Alkaline Trio might like this but to me as the casual listener it sounds average. If you like Bad Religion, Goldfinger or NoFX you might go for this. My personal opinion is that I would rather listen to Nemas instead.
