My first review in 2011 comes from one of my favorite artists. Fightstar Front man, Charlie Simpson is using the great site Pledgemusic.com to assist with the recording of his new solo album. If you pledge you can download the first release his new 5 song EP, "When We Were Lions." I was really sure what to expect, I was thinking just acoustic based songs but this sounds like full band affair and a production in itself. Don't expect Fightstar type of music on this EP, as its filled with indie folk rock that is best suited to his raspy dark vocals that suit him well.
This Ep starts with the title track "When We Were Lions" and has the ambient and urgent drum beat that leads the song in. Simpson belts "Do you remember when, we were like lions" in the chorus for a memorable hook to the erie pop rock song. Piano and kick drum start this next Bon Iver-ish song "If I Hide, Will You Come Looking." The falsetto chorus has a great vibe and a very different folk sound were are not too used to from Simpson.
"The Farmer and His Gun is the most southern sounding song with his harmonica full on with lines like "Run, Run Rabbit Run, Just don't get caught up by the farmer and his gun." "Bullet" is one of the best on the EP as Simpson takes this song to a new level with his own Cure influenced take on the acoustic cover originally by Hayden. Piano and urgent drums compliment the emotional piece "Lost" that ends this EP leaving you waiting for the full album.
He is flawless at this kind of music. Who knew he can do the hard, heavy stuff in Fightstar and also this indie rock that is suited for him. A real multi-talent Simpson is and shows his growth as a musician and versatility in the music world. I am looking forward to see what the full album release brings in 2011.
