The tour of Japan in 1978 and the live album Tokyo Tapes ended up being the last performances with lead guitarist Ulrich Roth who left the band to form Electric Sun. It was also the start of a new era where the band auditioned 140 guitarplayers in London, among them a few well known axemen such as Paul Chapman (UFO) and Peter Tolson (Pretty Things).
But it turned out they would find him much closer to home, Rudolf called up his friend Matthias Jabs who had played with bands like Lady and Fargo. But Jabs was painfully aware of his lack of experience in the recording studio,he had never worked on that level and felt under pressure. At the same time Michael Schenker had left UFO and called his brother Rudolf to ask if he could rejoin the band.
Their solution was to invite Michael into the studio to help out on some tracks while Matthias played on others, Michael contributed lead guitar on Another piece of meat, Lovedrive and Coast to coast, one of the few instrumentals The Scorpions have recorded. Lovedrive was the first album to enter Billboard 200 making it the most successful album so far.
The album cover was designed by Storm Thorgerson and stirred some controversy in the US where it was banned. But what a great album this is, it´s actually one of my favorite Scorpions albums along with Taken by force. We have the brilliant opener Loving you Sunday morning, the beautiful ballad Holiday and the more odd reggae rocker Is there anybody out there? The title track even bring thoughts to UFO which isn´t so strange with Michael Schenker on board.
The 50th band anniversary edition also contains the bonus track Cause I love you that is nothing more than an album filler I´m afraid. The highlight is the bonus dvd and a live concert in Japan 1979 plus a documentary with the bandmembers telling the story about Lovedrive. I tell you, it´s worth every penny.
