Fiona Joy Hawkins has won many awards for best pianist and best piano album, "Angel above my piano" is the 2nd album of 3 from the Australian classical trained pianist. "Her latest effort "Ice" was released in 2007 but let´s focus on the 2nd album. This romantic album will take you to the crystal desert of Antarctica with a fresh breeze of the Russian ballet "Swan lake" by Tchaikovsky, I come to think of Richard Clayderman but also Keith Jarret on the more jazz-like parts like in "Dance of the penguins". "Flight of the albatross" reminds a bit of the Swedish movie score composer Björn J:Son Lindh´s epic "Brusa högre lilla å", you could say Fiona is like a modern Chopin. I think this is exactly what the 3 minute MTV generation needs, to step out of the fast lane and live like every day was a sunday. It doesn´t happen too often that I write about classical music but I did an exception this time. |

The music hasn?t much in common with Atomic Opera but I still think the fans of his band should give this laid back album a try coz it has a warm acoustic autumn feel over it with the sitar bringing my thoughts to Led Zeppelin. Atomic Opera drummer Johnny Simmons is helping out with the rhythm section along with fretless jazz bassplayer Trip Wamsley that gives the album a rhythmic and warm sound. An album that takes a few spins to get into and the reason why I won?t give it 3 stars is that it?s 15 minutes too long. |

| Gary Hoey is no newcomer, he´s been around since the early 90´s making albums and also had a top 5 hit with Hocus Pocus in 1993. Gary almost got the job as Ozzy´s guitarist but we all know what a tough competition that is with all great guitar players Ozzy has had, and you can´t complain about Gary´s skills when it comes to shredding on his new album "Utopia" but he should focus on one direction instead of many different styles. This is a shattered album of instrumental guitar rock, funk, melodic rock/AOR and riff based hardrock. The best songs are the melodic tunes "Reminds me of you", "Inevitable", "Only human" and "If I knew then" but the heavy rocker "Walk away" is very good too. The funky songs are no fun while the instrumental songs are ok, but all in all a good album worth checking out. |

Frontiers makes a move on their 2nd Rock Opera release with the first one being "Genius" from Daniele Liverani, this time it?s Gary Hughes from TEN that has written and produced the ancient story of "Once and future king" in two parts.
Part 1 will be out Aug.25th and features musicians and singers as Bob Catley,Danny Vaughn(Tyketto),Lana Lane,Sean Harris(Diamond Head),Arjen Lucassen,Paul Hodson and Gary himself ofcourse.
If you like bombastic AOR like a mix of the early TEN albums and DARE,I suggest you take a good look at Gary?s new piece of work because it?s the best he has done since TEN?s 2nd album "The name of the rose".
I have never been a huge fan of his 80?s sounding productions and when the songs just got worse and worse on the later TEN records, the disaster was a fact and even more dreadful was his contribution to other artists lately but deep down inside Gary has this talent of composing epic stuff.
I?m happy to say that I was truly wrong about this new Rock Opera,I never thought that it could be good for a second but it is.....if you just hold on through the opening track "Excalibur" that feels like a boring Malmsteen track and is the weakest song on the whole album, the rest will be so much better.
Ok,the production is still pretty much a typical Gary Hughes product but it suits this huge sounding AOR,I have grown up listening to AOR and spent many nights going to sleep hearing Magnum and played the magnificent "Out of the silence" from DARE before going to party?s so when I hear good stuff like the ones Danny Vaughn(Tyketto) sings on,"Avalon" and "The reason why" I remember those classic years when music like this ruled the world.
And man,how good doesn?t Sean Harris sing on "Sinner"! He has a enormous feeling when he sings and any fan of this genre would be lying to himself by saying otherwise.
The synthesizers on "Dragon island cathedral" reminds me of Darren Wharton?s keyboards on Thin Lizzy?s Angel of death, lovely.
Bob Catley stand in a league on his own because the 2 songs he sings on is far the best on "Once and future king",the mighty "In flames" could?ve been featured on his latest masterpiece "When empires burn" and "King for a day" echoes out early Magnum in a sensational way! The conclusion is that I loved this album more the 2nd time I heard it and nevertheless it?s most satisfying that I was wrong in my prediction, solid stuff indeed and is recommendable for fans of 80?s rock! |

Part II of this Rock Opera follows the same footsteps of the first album, bombastic epic AOR but with less highlights because Part 1 featured Bob Catley on 2 songs (he only sings a duet on Part 2)and Danny Vaughn that is missing on this record. Dougie White(Rainbow) and D.C Cooper(Royal Hunt) makes an entrance but doesn?t reach the same high level of classy performance as Catley?s and Vaughn?s,however Sean Harris and Lana Lane (also on Part 1) has contributed with one vocal track each. I like Part 1 better but there are some enjoyable tracks here worth mentioning and it?s the director and composer himself on lead vocals-Gary Hughes,"There by the grace of the gods" and "I still love you" could?ve been taken from the first 2 albums with TEN,very good! "Rise from the shadows" and "The Pagan dream" sounds like cheap 80?s metal tunes, terrible and quickly I push the forward button on my CD player.Looking at this 2 part Rock opera-There?s no need to have them both,in fact Gary should only have recorded one album with all the best songs from both. |

It´s been quiet around Gary Hughes for some time now but now he´s back with his 4th solo album called Veritas (the latin word for Truth). Gary has worked with both Bob Catley and Hugo as producer and songwriter but he´s most known for being the mainman behind the group TEN. His previous solo albums has been Ok with his solodebut Strength Of Heart (hard to find these days) as the strongest.
Once again Gary has done almost everything on his own with some guest musicians that has played on the album. But I would love to see Gary use some outside songwriters because England has many good song writers and get somebody else to handle the production work. Get a guy like Dennis Ward for that work and I´m sure Gary´s album would sound a lot better, because Vertias sounds a bit weak in the production and don´t have the power in it.
The songs are very up and down with a couple of really good ones at the start of the album but the 2nd part of the album is boring and weak with songs that never takes off and has no hooklines or melodies that grabs a hold of you. But a song like Wide Awake In Dreamland, Gary shows that he can write interesting songs. Yes, this mid-temp song has lovely melodies and the chorus is just great. See Love Through My Eyes is a nice piece of AOR with a strong chorus and reminds of the first TEN album. On Time To Pray - I like the use of modern keyboard sound and he has managed to create something new and the chorus is good too. There are a couple of songs that are nice and Gary has couple of good ideas but for a whole album I don´t think he has enough of the good songs. |

These days you miss out on hundreds or even thousands of great melodic CD’s, because they don’t reach Europe. GREGG D HOLLISTER is far too unknown over here, but some of you may have his first solo CD “Watching The Time Go” (Indie 1999, USA). You’re probably glad if you do, since it’s a very good Westcoast CD in the vein of BILL MEYERS or the more commercial side of BILL CANTOS and LOU PARDINI. Anyway, the years went by and Gregg has mainly been playing for other artists. Well, up until now that is. All of a sudden he released this 2nd solo CD in the end of 2006. The style has changed dramatically, so now we’re talking melodic rock with quite a rootsy approach. This strong CD totally reminds me of great artists like TOM PETTY, HUEY LEWIS & THE NEWS, ERIC CLAPTON and even VENICE at times.
Before I continue I should add that I’m not used to listening that much to this kind of down to Earth melodic rockers, so don’t look too closely on my Grading. However, I recognise a good singer and a good songwriter when I hear him. So I’m not totally off-side here. So onto the songs, shall we? The fourth track “Libra Son” has a lot of Huey Lewis and later Venice in it. Same goes for the opener “Baby’s Arms” which shall be appreciated by any fan of Tom Petty. Also check out the eighth song “Goodtime”, since it has a lovely up-tempo and something like CHICAGO horns in it. Hey, occasionally Gregg D Hollister even has some Bill Champlin in his voice, even though it’s not all the time. Personally I also find one or two songs which are not my cup of tea, but maybe yours? One is “No Turnin’ Back” which drives away too far into the country and jazz direction for my taste. Strangely enough, one of the top songs of the CD even has some mandolin playing – and I like it. The song I am referring to is “4 Winds”. Sure, I would gladly have switched the mandolin (or whatever instrument it is) to a regular guitar, but whatever. It’s a very fine song. So I really like this CD, even though I am not mormallty the best guy to review melodic rock. Being a fan of westcoast pop, I wouldn’t be surprised if Gregg still has some demos from the early 90’s… dare I wish for another CD in that music style, pleeeease? |

Here we have a new classy melodic rock/AOR outfit out of Hungary. Traveller is their debut album and its filled with strong crunchy hookladen songs in the veins of Whitesnake, Talisman, Tyketto and Pretty Maids (their more AORish moments). I was totally blown away by this great album that’s well-produced and played.
Their singer Zoltán Bátky-Valentin is also a great new discovery . Ok, a couple of songs are maybe too Whitesnake sounding (1987 and Slip Of The Tongue) but they do it very good. They have managed to come up with a great sound with both riff strong guitars mixed with melodic keyboards that has given this album a fantastic sound. Listen to the wonderful mid-tempo rocker Stay that reminds of Tyketto´s debut album with strong hooklines and a catchy chorus.
Forever Hard contains some cool 80s keyboards and the chorus is superb with powerful background vocals. The title track Traveller is a brilliant AOR-rocker with big hooklines and melodies. Voices is a tribute to some of worlds greatest singers, a nice melodic affair with great lyrics. Dreamworld sounds like Pretty Maids at their most AORish moments, great mid-tempo songs. Call Of The Wild contains yet again great keyboards and the chorus is powerful. There are a couple of fillers that are just Ok nothing more and therefore the grade just stays at 3,5.
This is a new interesting AOR/Melodic Rock band and they are in the studio to follow up this great album together with Beau Hill (Europe, Ratt, Unruly Child, Winger) and I can’t wait to hear the result. If you are interested to hear what Beau has done to a couple of songs from this album, check out their Myspace site. If you are into quality music and those mentioned bands check out this new great band our of Hungary. |

For those that have missed that Swedish latest AOR sensations H.e.a.t has competed in the Swedish qualifications for the European Song Contest Finals in Russia with the song 1000 Miles the record company has released a new version of their debut album with that song included. So here is my review from last year plus some notes of the new song.
When you see band names like Giant, Honeymoon Suite and Red Dawn I know many AOR lovers gets excited and now we have a new band that can be compared with those fantastic bands. YES, H.E.A.T is a new AOR sensation from Sweden that has recorded a stunning debut album that’s filled with awesome songs that left me speechless. I was in chock after I listened to this album for the first time and I can say that I haven’t heard a good album like this for many years and this is one has it all.
These guys won the Musik Direkt (earlier called Rock-SM) in 2004 the same competition that Europe won in 1982. Now they have been signed to the Swedish actor Peter Stormare´s label StormVox and will have their debut album released. They also opened up for TOTO, Hanoi Rocks and will open up for Alice Cooper and stand on stage at the Sweden Rock Festival later this year.
This 6-piece band has a sound that lies very close to Giant, Honeymoon Suite, Boulevard, Red Dawn and the harmonies reminds of Def Leppard. The twin guitars gives the album a huge sound and sounds similar to Dann Huffs guitar work on the Giant albums and the fluffy keyboards lies in the background just perfect. The singer Kenny Leckermo has one the best voices I have heard in Sweden for a long time and sounds like Dann Huff (Giant) meets Larry Baud (Red Dawn). The album is brilliant from the first song to the last and you won’t find a single boring moment.
It starts with There For You that takes you on a ride in the Canadian AOR-world and this is Honeymoon Suite meets Boulevard at their peak. Just listen to the awesome melodies and the fantastic chorus and the wonderful keyboard sound, this is pure magic. If you dig this then I can say that there’s more to come. Never Let Go is a pompish AOR-rocker in the same lane as Rox Diamond and Red Dawn that’s filled with a huge chorus with strong background vocals and listen when Kenny screams his lungs out. Who need Giant when you hear a song like Late Nite Lady? This is like Giant on their Time To Burn album, classy stuff and the chorus is a winner.
The fantastic guitar intro opens up Keep On Dreaming that includes some stunning keyboard work and the chorus is absolutely outstanding with catchy hooks and wonderful harmonies and the guys in Giant would have been proud to have written a song like this. Follow Me is a true AOR-ballad with strong melodies and in the best Giant way with huge background vocals. Straight For Your Heart is pure AOR-heaven with an excellent chorus and this song reminds of Honeymoon Suite.
The keyboards and melodies are so right on the mid-tempo rocker Cry and listen to the outstanding vocals from Mr. Leckermo and look out for the big scream after the 3rd chorus that’s something extra, it gave me goosebumps. Feel It Again and You’re Lying is prime time Giant and I could not believe my ears how they can sound so much Giant. This is AOR by the numbers. I think by now you might know that this is a stunning album and I won’t go on and write about every song but they are all great.
The production is also so damn tight and crystal clear so you just have to buy this album and sit back and enjoy the ride. Best album of 2008 has been released by H.E.A.T and I don’t know what can beat this one? This is a huge monster freaking absolute stunning album and it don’t get better that this. As I said earlier I can’t remember when I heard this good album. So get your money ready for this album when it’s released in late April. How can these guys follow up this album because you can’t do much better albums than this. Fantastic work guys and now I´m looking forward to see you at the Sweden Rock Festival.
The new song 1000 Miles is an amazing rocker with big hooklines and an amazing chorus. This song was written for The Poodles but Heat got the chance to compete with this song. This band just continues to deliver outstanding songs and if you don´t own this album already then 1000 Miles is another reason to buy it. This is a song that runs in my head over and over again. If you got the album then buy the single. |

Sweden’s hottest AOR-band are back with a brand new single called Beg Beg Beg. This is the first taste for the forthcoming 2nd album from these Swedish AORsters that will be released in April. This 3-track single was included on the latest number of Sweden Rock Magazine. This is a band that has high expectations from me after their marvellous debut album from 2008 (I gave it 5 stars). So know they have to prove that the debut album was not a one-timer and deliver a strong follow up. Well, I can say right away that you don’t need to worry because this new single shows that H.e.a.t knows how to deliver high-class AOR with huge hooklines and catchy choruses. Beg Beg Beg is a AOR-party rocker with Giant riffs with wonderful melodies. This is a song that took me couple of spins before it hooked me up. Tonight is up next and this was a song that never made it to the debut album and I can’t understand why. This is a freaking stunning AOR-song with awesome keyboards, brilliant hooklines and with a monster sing-a-long chorus with powerful background vocals. This will be one of this years best songs for sure and this song will only be on the single. Living In A Memory is also a brilliant AOR-song with a touch of Canada AOR a´la Honeymoon Suite and Boulevard. Kenny Leckremo sings outstanding and it’s a joy to hear him sing, what a voice. I can’t wait to hear the new album but this will do for now. This is 9 minutes and 30 seconds AOR-heaven. Get it while you can and if you can’t find it then check out Sweden Rock Magazines web-site at www.swedenrockmagazine.com Sweden’s best AOR band are back and they are on fire.

| Michael Vail BlumSweden’s hottest AOR band are back with their 2nd album called Freedom Rock. They came out of nowhere and set the world on fire when they released their debut album in 2008. It was a magnificent debut album filled with classic AOR-sound with huge hooklines. They released a new song in 2009 called 1000 Miles that showed that these guys are here to stay and was Sweden’s 5th most played song on radio that year. Earlier this year H.e.a.t released a 3-track single called Beg Beg Beg with 2 stunning bonus tracks called Tonight and Living In A Memory that sounded awesome. I wondered if they could or manage to come up with a new cracker with their 2nd album and I must say that Freedom Rock is even better with stronger production, better arrangements and it’s filled with stunning songs. On some of the songs they have even put in female background vocals and it sounds superb. The songs has more variation than the debut and that is also a plus. This new album sounds even more AOR than the debut and I would say that bands like Starship (Love Among The Cannibals), Signal, FM (Tough It Out), Red Dawn and of course Giant (but not as much as on the debut). Kenny Leckremo´s voice has grown to be even stronger between these two albums and he sings just stunning, like a mixture of Mickey Thomas (Starship) and Mark Free (Signal, Unruly Child). The album opens up with We’re Gonna Make It and is a fantastic soundtrack AOR-rocker with plenty of keyboards and riff strong guitars that builds up the song to a first class chorus that grabs a hold of you and your in AOR-heaven. What a start of the album and it just gets better. Black Night is a duet with Kenny and Tobias Sammet (Edguy, Avantasia) and is a cracker with layers of melodies and the chorus is powerful with strong background vocals. I Can’t Look The Other Way could be the AOR-song of the year and it gave me goose-bumps (well there’s more songs on the album that gave me that). This is a fantastic AOR-rocker with powerful drum sound and Jona Tee gets extra room to shine with his keyboards. The chorus is huge with catchy hooklines and this is pure AOR magic and listen to the harmonies, classy stuff. Shelter is the ballad of the album and what a song then, this would have been a major hit back in the 80s for sure because the chorus is a winner with Giant feel over it. The melodies and Kenny’s voice makes it a perfect match. Stay 2010 (I think this song was on the Japanese version of the debut album) and this is a hook laden AOR-rocker that reminds of FM with big background vocals and a sing-a-long chorus. Everybody Wants To Be Someone starts slow but turns out to a excellent AOR-rocker with a phenomenal chorus with powerful background vocals and a song that won’t leave your head. This reminds so much of Starship at their peak. Nobody Love You Like I Do is filled with brilliant twin guitars and the sing-a-long chorus is huge with classy harmony vocals and H.e.a.t rock big time on this one. Cast Away is another AOR-winner with a brilliant chorus with plenty of hooks and wonderful melodies. But for the first time in H.e.a.t´s history they have written a less good song and that is High On Love that they could have left out. It’s not a bad one but if you compare with the rest of the songs it’s just a average one. But guys I forgive you for this false step because rest of the 12 songs are just amazing stuff. Freedom Rock is a true masterpiece and they have proved us that they are here to stay and this is the album of the year for sure so far. So be ready in May when it will be released and I suggest you don’t miss this outstanding AOR album or you will regret it for the rest of your life. |

Swedish H.e.a.t are back with a new album and talk about high expectations. These youngest took the AOR-world by surprise with their debut album (2009) and followed up with another monster album called Freedom Rock (2010). Soon after Freedom Rock was released lead singer Kenny Leckermo decided to leave the band and question was could they survive that? The answer is a BIG YES. Erik Grönwall a former winner of Swedish Idol took over as front man with class. I was a bit unsure if he could fill Kenny’s shoes, but I have to admit that he does a damn fine job on Address The Nation. H.e.a.t is a group that can write huge AOR-songs and the arrangements are just outstanding. The production is the strongest they had so far and that thanks to Tobias Lindell that has done a brilliant work. Tobias has found the right mixture of the twin guitars from Dave Dalone and Eric Rivers with Jona Tee’s fantastic keyboard sound. Songwise this is the weakest (still far away from bad) album in my opinion and it took couple of spins for me to get hooked on few of the songs, but after that I can only say that this is AOR by huge numbers. The album opens up with the Arena rocker Breaking The Silence with powerful whoa-whoa-whoa´s in the best Giant style and the chorus is huge. Next up is the first single Living On The Run and this is an AOR with everything from stunning melodies to brilliant hooks and a chorus to die for. This could be the AOR-song of the year. Falling Down takes hold of your right away with a bombastic chorus and Erik sings awesome. The ballad The One And Only could have been written by Europe in the heyday but in the H.e.a.t standards this is just OK. Stunning keyboards opens up Better Off Alone and the pre-chorus is just amazing and runs into an outstanding chorus in the best Giant style and you don’t get closer to AOR-heaven and they have even a keyboard solo. In And Out Of Trouble is built up little like Straight For Your Heart from the debut, but what the hell did they bring the saxophone that ruins almost the song. Heartbreaker in another song with whoa-whoa-whoa choirs and this rocks big time with great riffs and a sing-a-long chorus that won’t leave your head when you heard it. The album rounds off with Downtown that grows for every spin, but I miss a strong chorus on this one, but still an enjoyable song. Well, H.e.a.t are back with strength and has recorded an outstanding album that won’t disappoint any fans out there and might even get new ones. So don’t hesitate to get yourself a copy of this monster album in the best Europe (Out Of This World), Giant and Starship (Love Among The Cannibals) style.

Hail the Villain is a band found on RoadRunner Records. That should tell you something about the music. Yes it is hard rock. It is not metal but hard rock with a sleaze hint to it, similar to bands like Atom Smash, Fall of Envy, Saliva and a heavy version of American Bang. Add a singer that sometimes reminds me of David Draiman of Disturbed you are home.
Songs that stick from the get-go are Runaway (not a Bon Jovi cover!) and Blackout. There are however more song to check out on this album. There is a quite high tempo throughout this entire album and it is filled with cool riffs and nice guitar solos. So if you are into that you will like this album. I think that the band somehow avoids the worst clichés and manages to find their own sound. With a cool attitude and some strong songs these bunch might be a band to look out for. |

Haken's Aquarius is one of the strongest debuts created in recent memory. Many bands first attempts at professional release fall short, their sound not fine-tuned to perfection, not yet having found their niche. Haken has managed to break this trend, bursting out of the gate with enviable force, their music already composed better than many comparable bands have been able to achieve throughout their entire respective careers.
When I turn on the first song, the feeling I want from an album, is the feeling I get. The whole arrangement of the song is massive and grandiose and makes me want to go buy a cape. But that aside, Haken add their own personality and their own quirks, and that make things a bit interesting, throwing in growling vocals and Meshuggah riffs into the pot with an almost carnival-esque feel poured on top thanks to the keyboards. And then there's the jazz. There are points where you envision things switching to black and white and people getting their jazz hands going. All this in the first song makes me wonder what else they've got to put together for the remaning six song's, and the answer I get from the album is, It's big, and it's very very prog. Alltough the album in it's whole takes a dedicated listener, Haken manage to make things interesting enough to have my brain and my ears full attention.
The album "only" has 7 tracks on it, but in the spirit of prog the songs are long, with the shortest being 6:43 and the longest 16:56, and they are all equally awesome!
So, with such an incredible debut, from a relatively inexperienced band at this point, I quiver in anticipation to see what this genius group of musicians releases next! I can easily foresee them as the next Porcupine Tree, perhaps even the next Dream Theater. Standing alone, this is according to me the strongest release in 2010. Taken in context, the potential displayed here is utterly overwhelming. Anyone who considers themselves to be even remotely interested in this genre needs to listen to this album. It will be time well spent. The progressive genre, which has grown largely stale in recent years, may have just witnessed the birth of its savior. |

| Halestorm plays music we have heard a million times before, but this kind of modern rock without frills must be based on strong melodies and a fat production (whatelse can it be when we talk about Howard Benson and mixed by Chris Lord Alge) and this band sits on the ingredients. Moreover, it is fun to for once see a girlsinger for this type of music. If I mention bandnames like Trapt, Shinedown and Staind you know which neighborhood we are in. LZZY HALE who sings and plays guitar has a really powerful voice and this disc is definitely a must to check out if you like modern rock with great chorus. |
