Thomas King released his first EP "High on life" in 2010 which landed him a spot on Music Connection Magazine´s list of Hot 100 unsigned artists, Thomas is from Vienna but moved to Los Angeles to focus on his music career and let me tell you - this guy is really talented. His new EP "Last night living" is produced by Grammy nominated Brandon Friesen (Nickelback) and the sound is so cool, think 80´s powerpop spiced with new wave-ish AOR like a mix of Urgent meets The Cars and even traces of Big Country. All 4 songs are really strong but my personal fave is "Round again", but if you´ll ask me again next week it might be "Last night living" or the super catchy "It starts tonight". This is how good he is.

These days it seems like the frontman solo album craze has caught on like the emo hairstyle fashion. Everyone and their brother has either came out with a solo album or is in the midst of working on one. Many artists of which have come out with the acoustic album or the folk rock one. Well here´s a little something to refresh your ears. Trever Keith of Face To Face releases his album Meloncholics Anonymous and I must say, does so with a boom.
At first I thought I was going to pop in the album and just hear a bunch of acoustic songs and a softer folkier side of Trever like many of todays solo takers. To my surprise, I was proven wrong right from the Open Hand-sounding first track Cross Your Heart and Hope To Die, as it fills with the distorted sounding vocals kicking into nice upbeat music, fast rhythms and a very catchy chorus. Angst, power, passion and big choruses are the defining element to this album. The first few songs remind me of a side that Face To Face could have taken to a more mainstream style. The album slows down a bit with the almost Thrice reminiscent Sick of Me and Incommunicado. Great vocals all around and the music shines right through the music. The guitars on the album have great delicate sounds especially on the electronic ballad Polish, The Cure sounding Half Asleep and almost Smiths style Say Goodbye Again.
That clean gutiar tone with a little bit of chorus is the highlight of these songs, accompanied by airy melodies and powerful vocals. the album was a schocker to me. There are really only a few tunes on here that I can give or take. The majority of the albums songs can be featured as a single. Trever Keith really shines on this record and shows that he is a great songwriter and musician. Just give this one a listen as the music is memorable and is a modern sounding album with big choruses and great melodic hooks. |

The keyboard wizard Vitalij Kuprij from Ucraine is known for his progressive/neo-classical work with bands such as Artension and Ring Of Fire. On this new album he has gathered a powerful line-up with Michael Harris on guitar(that also released a soloalbum recently) and the former Yngwie Malmsteen/Ark rhythm section of John Maccaluso on drums and Randy Coven on bass. Mr. Kuprij shows what a master of he is on keyboards and delivers some impressive instrumental progressive/neo-classical music. This is a very nice album at places and when he delivers songs with plenty of melodies, I?m into this but he seems to lose the sense of melodies on a couple of tracks and then the songs gets very boring.
But mostly he has found a great mixture of keyboards and guitars with layers of melodies. So if you?re a fan of Vitalij?s previous albums then this will give you a good time. What makes this release even more interesting is that this is being released as a limited edition double pack of just 2000 units with Vitalij?s latest band project called Revenge which until now has been unavailable outside Asia. Revenge is a typical neo-classical metal album featuring an all-star line-up with vocalists such as Goran Edman (Malmsteen, Kharma), Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow, Deep Purple), Dougie White (Cornestone, Malmsteen), Apollo Papathanasio (Firewind, Time Requime), Chris Catena and Shaun Leahy. An album that goes in the same style as Ring Of Fire and Artension. Songs like "Burning My Soul", "I Don?t Believe In Love", "Follow Your Heart" and "Stand Up And Fight" are really good songs. The sound is very good and also powerful and bombastic. This is a nice package for fans of Vitalij Kuprij. |

I probably have 1000 CDs in my collection sounding like Wayne Kerr. I dont know if that is a good or bad sign. I mean, I must enjoy this type of music very much on one hand, otherwise I wouldnt have that many CDs in the genre... On the other hand, the lack of own originality is quite obvious. But apart from that this album is a pleasant journey in well-produced modern poprock. Musically were somewhere around Bebo Norman vs Wayne Kirkpatrick. Add influences of both Jars of Clay and Michael W Smith and were quite on the mark for the guy. And its sure quality stuff were dealing with. Thats for sure. Second out "High" is one proof for that and the softer "True" is another real nice one. A beautiful piano and Waynes close voice in a great mix. Lovely. And there are a bunch of others, like seventh out, the rockier "Jesus Paid It All" worth checking out, and if youre into the artists I just mentioned earlier in the review I must suggest you to listen to this man as well. Even if there isnt any revolutionary stuff were talking about. Safe as a Swedish Volvo. |

Did you know that?
Sahaj of RA held the record for longest single note, for a male vocalist, in a song, having held a high B for 24 seconds. He was overtaken by Jan Werner Danielsen of Norway with 28 seconds in his live version of Nella Fantasia. This record breaker can be heard on Ra´s live album, Raw, on the track "Skorn". Sahaj Ticotin overtook the previous record of 20.2 seconds which was held by Morten Harket, the lead singer of a-ha, in the song, "Summer Moved On".
