Since Dan Godlin was three years old, the Boston native has been obsessed with the idea of generating "organized sound." Whether it was strumming on his Mom's old ukulele, banging teeny fingerprints onto the wall, or tapping fragile wine glasses with forks and knives, he loved to innovate. It was clear to his parents that Dan had a need to understand instruments, and so he began piano lessons at an early age.
By the time Dan was ten, he became remarkably interested in the different types of music that surrounded him. One day while listening to his Dad's "oldies" cassette-tape, he fell in love with the song "Small Town" by John Cougar. Returning home later that day, Dan ran straight to the piano. Without notes or previous demonstration, he was able to piece together the song he had listened to on repeat for hours. With this newfound ability to play music by ear, Dan was able to dip into his creative juices, and soon was not only reconstructing, but also improvising.
Dan later taught himself to play guitar and discovered his love for creating beautiful melodies. Soon he began to write his own musical content and developed a unique sound. Dan was inspired by his ability to turn his emotions into music, even before adding any words. But it didn't take very long for him to connect the dots. He soon found his feet as a lyricist and morphed what was once instrumental composition into song. Since then, Dan has fallen in love with everything about the creative process -- the freedom, the passion, and the satisfaction of honest and truthful expression -- and he has worked very hard to find his niche as an artist.
Listening to Dan's music, it is easy to hear the influences of such artists as John Mayer, Gavin DeGraw, Jack Johnson, and The Fray...to name a few. He is currently working in New York City on his debut album. All of Dan's songs reflect the emotional events and experiences drawn from his past and present, both good and bad. Godlin says it best, "It's so rewarding to be able to integrate my personal life into all of my songs. It helps to define not only who I am as an artist, but more importantly, who I am as an individual." The songs also echo the sentiments of many people out there, who after sharing Dan's journey, will not only connect with him, but will hopefully feel that his music has helped their voice to be heard and understood.
