Metal Rockers Nonpoint have just released their 6th studio album entitled "Vengeance" on Beiler Bros Records and show no signs of slowing down. I have followed the band since their debut album "Statement" that crushed rap/rock with metal at a brutal force. The band has made its way through years of this music as most bands in their scene have faded away through time. I had a chance to interview the singer Elias Soriano...

Can you explain a little about the name Nonpoint? How did you guys come up with it?
Elias Soriano: It’s a long story. Lets just say my drummer dug a word in a song. Then, there was Nonpoint.
Can you tell us a little about how you guys met to form the band?
Elias Soriano: Just two different bands playing the same scene. We dug each others style, exchanged numbers, jammed together, and the rest is history.
When you read bands bios, it sounds like they form a band and next thing you know they are signed. Did you guys have to struggle or was it pretty easy to land a deal?
Elias Soriano: We spent a couple of years in the local scene like everyone else. We just got lucky; right place right time.
It seems there arent many bands in your genre that are still around from the time Nonpoint came out … How did you guys pull through to keep going with label changes and the music industry today?
Elias Soriano: We don’t let ourselves get trapped in the mindset of media labels on our music. Were around because were honest with our music and our fans. That’s what keeps you around.
How is it being on Bieler Bros Records now opposed to a more major label?
Elias Soriano: Labels are labels. Theres no difference.
I have noticed with all your albums the title is always so fitting to where the band is. "Statement" being the first on a major label, "Development" being the second, "Recoil" being third after the label switch and then following "To The Pain." On your new release "Vengeance" can you describe what this record is all about?
Elias Soriano: Getting it off your chest the way youve always wanted.
How was the recording process different this time than the last effort "To The Pain" and working with Matt LaPlant (Sikth)?
Elias Soriano: Matt is the engineer at the studio, hes not in the band Sikth, but hes an amazing mind in the studio. It was a pleasure working with him. I just wish we had more time to work with him.
I hear a lot of resemblance to the "Statement" record on this album, pounding faster riffs, and that in your face rock. Especially on "Hands Off" it reminds me of "Orgullo" in a way. Did you guys go for that sound or was that just how the songs came out?
Elias Soriano: Just how it happened. We write how were feeling at that moment and hope for the best.
The cartoon drawing its cool and different for the band, who did the artwork for this album?
Elias Soriano: Ken, our bass player. Hes insane.
Congrats on the track "Everybody Down" from the new album being featured on WWEs new video game, "Raw Vs. Smackdown 2008". Its nice promo for a band to be featured on a video game. How did that come about?
Elias Soriano: Weve worked with THQ in the past. They called again. Thank God for the body slam.
I must say the cover of "In The Air Tonight" on the "Recoil" album is pretty awesome, how did you guys decide to cover that tune?
Elias Soriano: A suggestion from our drum tech Scott Drost. Swear on my life.
I remember hearing a slower remix version of the song "The Truth" on your site a while back when "Recoil" came out. It was a cool vibe and a new direction for the group. Any plans on releasing any other slower mixes of songs?
Elias Soriano: Weve talked about it. Who knows, it could happen if people ask this question more often.
I know "The Great American Rampage Tour" just started but you guys must be excited to get out there and play all the new stuff?
Elias Soriano: Its like a whole new show for us.
What kind of music do you guys listen on the road?
Elias Soriano: Anything that doesnt sound like us!
If you can make the ultimate bill to play, who would be on it?
Elias Soriano: Tool Deftones Korn (original lineup) Dredg Circa Survive
I want to thank you for all your time and I wish you the best of luck with the band. Anything else you would like to say to the fans?
Elias Soriano: Come to one of the shows. It’s an experience you can never read about, hear about, or download. It’s life changing. |
