Review

Jon Brion is as we know a true hero. After his time in Semantics and The Grays he´ve continued to deliver som damn good modern powerpop combined with a great career as a producer for Eels, Macy Gray, Aimme Mann and more. He was also heavily involved in the great Magnolia movie and soundtrack with the extraordinary music, and now he´s back at the soundtrack scene! And that is an album for a movie called I LOVE HUCKABEES (directed by David Russell). The music is both instrumental scoremusic (Its not BIG orchestral stuff - its more cool minimalistic and atmsopheric sort of music) and some really cool pop-songs signed Brion. As we are a pop/rock site we should of course concentrate ourselves on the popsongs from Brion and if it is worth spending money on the album. I can tell you that you can safely buy the album if you enjoy his previous powerpop-albums. Both solo and with his band. It sounds like The Jellysfish mixed with Crowded House but all in the typical Brion-costume - all spiced with a little more clean 60s edged sound than normal when it comes to Brion. Second out "Knock Yourself Out" smells The Beatles a long way, and "Didn?t Think It Would Turn Out Bad" could have been on The Grays album. The softer "Over Our Heads" shows another side of Brion. A side that smells Elton John´s early work. Beautiful piece. "Revolving Door" takes us back to the 60´s pop and "strangest times" is not that interesting. And the last one out with vocals - "Get What It´s About" is a VERY cool 6 minute long tunes that is a soft naked powerpop ballad that develops into a big boombastic last 2 minute orgasm. Very cool album and if you´re a freak of Jon Brion you should check out this work directly. You should also do that if you like cool scoremusic.

Did you know that?

James Blunt wrote the song "No Bravery" while he was on call in Kosovo.
