Slow, calm and a bit mysterious – that’s how BROKEN, the debut single from Canadian rock band, OUTMATCH starts. Then – all the sudden – the song speeds up and culminates in a drum and guitar driven cry of desperation. A cry of unreturned love. „BROKEN describes the situation of being together with somebody, and ignoring the fact that this person is just not good for you, that this person is going to hurt you badly. You know it, but you want this relationship so much that you are willing to do anything to make it work. You just can’t give up or walk out – ignoring the truth. It’s a feeling of helplessness“, explains Martin Acosta, singer and songwriter of MAXI MEDIA’s latest discovery OUTMATCH.

When talking about their music, Martin Acosta (Vocals / Guitars) Mike Kovac (Bass), Kyle Lazenka (Drums / Vocals) and Jay Formosa (Guitar / Vocals) will tell you it’s all about the highs and lows of life and relationships. It’s all about the mystery of life and the never-ending effort to get behind it and to find all the answers. OUTMATCH know what they are talking about – they’ve been there. BROKEN is also an abstract out of Acosta’s personal life. But one would be wrong to assume that it’s only OUTMATCH’s lyrics that awe the listener – no: It’s the mix of heart-wrenching lyrics and hand crafted rock music. While other artists often get lost in empty phrases, they keep it strictly simple and honest. There’s no reason to hide. Each instrument tells the story of BROKEN – imbedded in the composition and production. The story of the song is in it’s own musical language, and goes hand in hand with the lyrics. OUTMATCH are the real deal!

That’s the key, talking OUTMATCH – the symbiosis of music and lyrics – coming across with the same tenor, describing a special feeling in a special situation. Martin: “Music is pure emotion. It’s about finding yourself in music, it’s about the connection. Everybody knows that – you listen to a song and it totally takes you away.. perhaps to some memory of your life, or maybe it just moves you enough to feel something. Everybody has their own, individual soundtrack for life. Music can help you through really hard times... even times when you think to yourself: I’ll never get out of this.“ Martin has been there, he’s seen it.

Fortunately even, one might say. For if Martin had not endured this, OUTMATCH might not have come to be– who knows. It was when Acosta’s big dream was shattered, that he hit the rock bottom, and music helped get his life back on track. It was then, being impressed by the power of music, that he thought for the first time ever: “That’s something I want to do – I want to make music and connect with people!“ After he and his long time high school friend, Mike, joined several bands, they met Kyle and Jay in Toronto. The four of them didn’t remain undiscovered for very much longer. It was Canadian producer Justin Gray (Joss Stone, Emma Bunton) who connected the band with the German producers, the Bermann Brothers (Don Henley, Michael Jackson, Avion) who, in turn, have a worked a lot with MAXI MEDIA, who signed OUTMATCH in 2005.

BROKEN is the first single of OUTMATCH’s debut album WEIGHTLESS, which will be released in spring 2008.
