Review

GINO VANNELLI is nothing short of a genius. Sure, I'll be the first one to admit that some of his later albums have been too jazz oriented for my taste, even though the quality's always top notch. However, when "These are the days" was released in 2006 we got a bunch of new songs in exactly the style that has given Vannelli a place in the hearts of many westcoast fans.

On this “Still hurts to be in love” he has re-recorded 13 songs from his long career. You get stuff all the way from his early days in the mid-70’s and onwards. The sound is awesome and the musicians are equally great. For example, the guitar playing from Allen Hinds is hard to beat! Wow. In some songs Gino is quite true to the original versions, where he stretches farther from them in other songs. For example “I just wanna stop”, with a softer approach. It’s a bit jazzier but with such a rich arrangement. Vannelli must be one of the best singers around – just hear him on this CD! Other songs that stand out (well, all of them do in some way) are “Wild horses”, “Venus envy” with its lovely beat, and the jazz tinged “Living inside myself”.

Even though this is not a new album, it’s like hearing Gino Vannelli live. All westcoast fans are gonna love this CD, I am sure.
