The Alchemist is a project put togheter by Greg Lake Band drummer Carl Kennedy. This album was recorded in 1994 with vocalist Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple) but unfortunately the album was never released.......until now. Other players on the album is Tim Pierce (Toy Matinee, Roger Waters, Phil Collins, Bon Jovi) and Ian Crichton (Saga) on guitars. I got to say that Glenn sings very good throughout the whole album and shows more passion and emotion in his singing than before and he does not scream in the songs like he got a tendency to do. Carl Kennedy sings on two tracks and he is not a bad singer either. "Songs From The Westside" is a collection of well-crafted songs that blend intricate tribal rhythms with guitar driven passion. Powerful and dynamic with just a hint of blue eyed soul and very laid back. This will make fans of Traffic, ELO, Marllion and King Crimson run to the store and buy a copy. The 8 tracks on the album are nice and there is no outstanding tracks because all of them has the same level, th all sound very tight and well played and produced. Maybe there should have been some more up-tempo song but this is a great album to listen to in the cold winter night and very well done. So rockers that want heavy guitarriffs and powerful choruses can forgive "Songs From The Westside" and check up something else but fans of mentioned acts and Glenn Hughes must check this.
