Kill The Alarm (KTA) released an album back called Fire Away in 2007 that is almost criminally overlooked. It was a really good modern rock album with lots of killer tracks and we fans have been waiting for a follow up for quite a while now. Now they return with the EP Against the Grain. It consists of five songs. Right from the start we hear that familiar sound and voice from the Fire Away album. I do think that I can hear a little bit softer approach this time compared to the previous album.
Songs that stand out right away are The Only One and Against the Grain. They are both quite soft songs and they bring out the best of Garen’s vocals. Opening Don’t Run Away displays some almost reggae beat halfway through the song. Begin Again is a quite poppy song with some nice keyboard effects to it. Not the Same is more of a straight rock song and it finishes the EP in a nice way.
Overall, this is a nice EP that show some promise for a potential full length album. I do not find quite the same high level of songs as on Fire Away but this is still a solid release. Check it out if you like quality modern rock.
