Pete Yorn, the best singer songwriter at the moment? Yes, without a doubt, the best for a long, long time. With great melodies in a personal package he delivers songs that gets stuck at once and lasts forever. His new album ?Nightcrawler?, is just out and melodic.net had the opportunity to ask a bunch of question. And I know, he fit damn good in the rock genre too!
Hey there Pete, how are you? Pete: Im splendid, thx.
Your new album ?Nightcrawler? will soon be out. Nervous? Pete: It actually came out on aug 29th....I think I was nervous beforehand....those nerves drive me though. Its nice now to have let it into the world...to be able to let it go.
Your previous efforts did very well and got really nice reviews. Was it harder to write for ?Nightcrawler?? Could you feel a lot of pressure from yourself and the label? Pete: def. feel the most pressure from myself. I am always obsessed with improving what I do, and how do u improve upon perfection? ;-) like don rickles...I kid.......This is my curse. Im just focused on making music that feels good.
How would you compare this new album to your previous ones? Is it different in any way? Pete: Well..this ones quite different....completely different songs appear on Nightcrawler, than on musicfor...and day I forgot. ....I told u, I kid.....I guess the biggest difference for me is the perspective that went into the songwriting. As I live more, my view of the world is ever changing and that is reflected in the songs.
You have always worked with great musicians on your albums and this time Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters and Martie Maguire and Natalie Maines (Dixie Chicks) are helping you out. Is it important for you to have great guest artists on your records? Pete: Its more fun, than than "important" to have guests on my record...it can become quite a bore playing everything yourself all the time. I tried to pick the right person for the right job.
Are there any special artist/artists that you would love to work with on your next album? Pete: I havent decided yet.
One thing surprises me a little; ?Undercover? that is the new album is a nice gift from you. But I?m curious why it ended up on ?Nightcrawler? and not on ?Day I Forgot? that was released like a year after the Spider Man soundtrack. Pete: I thought about putting it on day I forgot but it just didnt make sense to me in that context. It seems it was always destined to be on Nightcrawler.
Are there any songs on the new album that feels more special or personal in some way than the others? Pete: "How do you go on?"...cos it was inspired by my 96 year old grandfather who has seen it all and has been through a lot and is always able to find time to laugh.
I read that you want to finish a song before you start working on a new one. Why? Pete: That was a reference to recording songs. Not writing songs. In studio...I prefer to focus on one song at a time...even if it takes weeks to capture.
So you don?t have that many unfinished songs at home? Pete: I have hundreds of unfinished songs at home and away from home.
You released a limited edition Ep called ?Westerns? for your acoustic tour this summer. Is it possible that it will be released for a wider audience later on? Pete: Yes...I would count on it.
You will be touring a lot the next months. Is playing live in front of all your fans the ultimate experience for artists you think? Pete: I can only speak for myself.... But for me....I am always thankful for the opportunity to present my songs to a group of people who actually want to be there. There are so many factors that go into putting on a show......I dont really do setlists....so I find it challenging to keep coming up with a fresh presentation every nite. I enjoy that challenge though. As for the fans....they are my biggest source of energy on most nights....sometimes Ill be really tired or run down...and when they light up and give it back....the energy just comes right back into my body.
Your current backing band is Minibar, which is really cool. What?s the story behind that; they?re British, aren?t they? Pete: They are brits.....they are great old friends of mine and I enjoy playing with them. ....Some of the nicest fellas Ive ever known. Right now I have a stripped down version of minibar touring with me....just the bass player Sid and the drummer Malcolm.
I see that you will do some shows ?down-under? with Dixie Chicks. Is there any chance that you will do any in Europe this year or maybe next year? Pete: Id love to tour in europe.....seems like early next year will be the right time.
Thanks for your time Pete; good luck with the album and the touring.
