Excalion is a new powermetal band from Finland in the same vein as Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica - consisting of the 5 members Jarmo Paakkonen-Vocals,Jarmo Myllyvirta-Keyb,Vesa Nupponen-Guitar,Tero Vaaja-Bass and Henri Pirkalajnen-Drums.
Timo Sahlberg plays the bass on the album while Tero Vaaja handled the guitarparts along with Kimmo Hanninen but original bassist Timo and guitarist Kimmo has left the band and then Tero took over the bassduties as well as Kimmo was replaced by the new guitarist Vesa Nupponen.
Musicwise this band plays symphonic powermetal and started out playing mostly covers by Stratovarius and Nightwish along with their own songs,Excalion is a tight band which is so important in this genre but singer Jarmo Paakkonen?s high pitched voice feels a bit annoying after a few songs into the album.
It sounds a lot better though on the mighty ballad "Heart and home",you can ofcourse find many cliche?s on their debut album "Primal exhale" but it?s all performed with class and will appeal to all powermetal fans.
3rd track "Reality bends" stands out as one of the most memorable songs of the album and if they can write more of that stuff in the future,this band is to be reckoned with.

Juha?s opinion:
Excalion was born in late 2000 in central Finland, yes where else would this new Power metal act come from? This is their debut album and they deliver impressive melodic Symphonic Power Metal that reminds very much of Stratovarius meets Nightwish without the opera vocals of Tanja. To be a debut album this is a very strong album and the singer Jarmo Paakkonen has a very strong voice that reminds a little of Jorn mixed with Timo Kotipelto(Stratovarius) in places without losing his own touch.
The whole album don?t keep the same level throughout the entire album and has some lowdowns but the tracks that are good are really nice and they sure have something nice to build up in the future. Just listen to a song like "A Moment In The Spotlight" that is brilliant powermetal with strong melodies and a pompish/powerful chorus filled with strong background vocals and catchy hooks.
The majestic journey of "Dire Waters" is another highlight on the album with wonderful melodies. If you?re into Masterplan ,then check out the ballad "Heart & Home".
A very solid and nice power metal debut album this Finnish band Excalion has done and I?m sure that the next album will be even stronger.
