To say a band has obvious touchstones is to generally imply that they?ve merely siphoned the best parts of their favorite bands together and attempted to fake it as their own. In this case, the influences are way obvious: this four piece seemingly used the Catherine Wheel single "Waydown" as a sonic template for their whole damn album, but they do it in a much more stripped down, and less-angsty manner; then take your Quicksand influence by way of, say, Handsome, or Soundofspeed, or some other short-lived, heavily underrated post-hardcore set, and, to top it off--and this is more like getting banged on the first date with a supermodel then the boring old cherry on top--these dudes obviously listen to Failure a lot. But, while they let their adoration for Mr. Andrews shine pretty brightly throughout the disc, this isn?t "Magnified" part deux, or even another attempt to rip-off "Fantastic Planet" note for note (that shit only had three good songs on it anyway) as it sounds more like Open Hand?s twisted Failure meets QOTSA meets Tears for Fears take on things, "You & Me," than anything Failure, Lusk or even Year of the Rabbit ever did. In the end, sure, you can toss a bunch of cool, lesser-known bands around when telling your friends about Renee Heartfelt, but, it just so happens that all those bands fucking own, and, by taking such rather disparate influences and doing it, well, in a pretty damn heartfelt manner, so does Renee Heartfelt.
