Saga keyboardist Jim Gilmour has recorded his first ultimate progrock album with "Great Escape", fans of Saga has always known Jim?s progressive side but this is the first time we get to hear a complete solo effort from Jim that stands next to U.K, E.L.P and Jordan Rudess soundwise.
This is keyboard oriented progrock with jazz influences, the highlights are the majestic opening track "No sign" and funny enough the 13 minute long closing track "Last Portage".
He and Saga drummer Steve Negus released the GNP album "Safety zone" in 1987 which in my opinion only was a half-progressive effort, the songs on this album didn?t match Saga either.

In 1997, Jim released his first solo album "Instrumental encounters" which is just what the title says - an instrumental album and he hasn?t completely left his passion for instrumental music because the new album contains 5 vocal based tracks and the other 5 are new instrumental encounters.
Besides Jim on keyboards and lead vocals, musicians on "Great Escape" are: John Bianchini - guitar, Christian Simpson - drums, Roger Banks - drums and Corrina Tofani - additional vocals.
Jim Gilmour is an impressive keyboardist and a decent singer, I prefer his voice in the more calm songs where we are used to hear him in Saga.
Good album anyhow and a must for any Saga fan!
