Have you guys heard of Jonah Smith before? I had not until I got this promo album for review. Apparently he has been releasing lots of independent stuff and based on this album I have to go check it out. Well, that will have to be a while later because I have to tell you about this album first. This is a vibrant album that I guess would fit in the folk/pop category. One cool thing about this record is that is recorded entirely from funds donated by fans, talk about devoted fans!

What strikes me at first is Jonah’s voice. He sounds like Don Henley! And I do mean that in a good way! The first two songs have got me wondering if I am listening to a Henley solo album. Sure, Smith’s voice does sound a bit strained on “Cabin Fever” but I actually think is suits the song in a weird way. Here and there we get treated to choirs in the background, making this album full of soul and warmth. An example of that is the title track, a wonderful song. “Love Gets Lost”, “Built For Two” and “I Know What You’re Talking About” are all songs worth checking out as well.

“Mrs. Cooper” oozes of… Simon and Garfunkel! I bet you did not see that one coming and neither did I. It is a good song nonetheless. Of course there are some dips in quality here and there and some songs are just not that great. But overall this is a pleasant surprise and something out of the ordinary if you are into the softer side of folk rock. Tons of roots and soul influences make this album worth checking out. And once again, Jonah’s voice is something special so have a listen to it. Good work by his fans allowing this album to exist because my friends, this is a good one!
