I think we all can agree on that the best live albums were made in the 70's where most live releases sounded better than the studio recordings, nowadays the live albums sound like a greatest hits album with live audience added in the background. The versions on the classic live albums in the 70's were more energetic and also most often different compared to the studio versions.
The British boogie rocking band Foghat's live from 1977 is one of those classics, their bluesy hard rock was very successful in America with hits like "Slow ride" and "I just want to make love to you". Perhaps their best studio album is "Stone blue" that came out after this live album in 1978, but if you don't own any Foghat albums - I must say that "Live" is a perfect introduction for this band. We get the best songs off their 5 first studio albums between 72-75.
The music is similar to bands like Grand Funk, Status Quo and Montrose. Two of the members of the classic line up, Dave Peverett - Vocals/Guitar and Rod Price - Guitar, aren't with us anylonger but the band is still going strong with the original member Roger Earl - Drums and Craig McGregor - Bass (who was featured in this 1977 line up). Peverett was replaced by Ted Nugent's former rhythm guitarist Charlie Huhn in 2000.
